The kinetic output from these algorithms has a life expectancy exactly equal to the time you spend viewing them. During that life they will never repeat. When you leave and return a new life is born and that life will be unique. 

Recording a moment as a static outcome is the equivalent of photography (within the algorithm’s world). Recording the kinetic outcome, for a period of time, might be considered cinematography. In both cases, as the artist, I fulfil all the usual roles associated with those mediums (writer, actor, director, producer, casting, props, etc.). We might say the technical platform fulfils some of the actor role and that of the venue. So, when you view on your device, you provide the venue and the ability to act in concert with my script and direction.

I am honoured to have my FOR COVIMETRY outcomes represented in this exhibition in Poland. The project is curated by Mark Starel. This recording was made for a Polish TV channel. To have my online animation featured, both in the exhibition and this recording, has made for a pleasant end to a challenging year.

The face mask is used here as a symbol of our times. No masks are being sewn and none coloured by these outcomes. The mask outline is an artistic device and nothing more.

A virtual exhibition, featuring a never ending contemporary algorithmic animation.

The random colour spirals seemed to fit with these COVID times. The spiral representing geometry. Then, combined with the random colour and mark size, representing the spread of the virus outward from the source. I then decided to offset the spiral to represent the asymmetric infection pattern in the population, between age groups in particular. But, these things are just my motivation for constructing these abstract algorithmic serial outcomes.

It is (maybe) worth saying, the mask is used here as a symbol of our time and as a tool to add context. I do not make masks and I do not sell masks. Indeed, I question their use as anything more than a symbol of compliance. My anecdotal observation is, they cause the user to touch their face more often, and are just as likely to be counter productive. I make no scientific claims, this is just my own gut (dare I say) common sense feeling. The point is, I do not encourage or condone their use as anything more than a symbol of our time.

DUAL SPIRAL is a Processing sketch, an online P5js script and a series of large format prints. Each visit to the DUAL SPIRAL STREAM results in a unique presentation of two overlapping noisy colourful random spirals. A series of fixed perspective moments in time have been captured and reprocessed into large format prints, a small selection of which are currently available at codedimages.pixels.com.

These examples are shown as 60 inch wide metal prints installed in a contemporary space. Every print is available on a substrate of your choice and a size to suit your need.

A variation on the SQUARE SPIRAL STREAM (*), made as a pure Processing sketch. ”SQUARE’ as in the lines are drawn at a right angle to the previous line. So, rectangular in this 16 x 9 HDTV format installation. Each spiral is a single colour chosen at random. Each line is a random width (within predefined limits). Spirals are continuously drawn from the same point of origin. This random construction process is continuous making each view a new experience.

A stand-alone kinetic art display installation. Now mounted with a mobile stand. A RPI3B+, Samsung 43 inch HD TV, Processing, powered by two TV USB ports. Auto boots into the sketch. A plug and play mobile exhibition setup. Awaiting opportunity. Free standing, only needs a convenient single mains socket. Turn on at opening time. Turn off at closing time. No other intervention required.

A variation on the RADICAL SPIRAL STREAM (*), made as a pure Processing sketch. Each spiral is constructed of discreet ellipses drawn in a spiral. Each ellipse is randomly equal in size to the previous ellipse or fractionally larger or smaller. Each spiral is made from a single randomly selected colour. Each spiral is drawn from the same point of origin. This random construction process is continuous making each view a new experience.
