oxfordshire artweeks 2023

I am participating in Oxfordshire ARTWEEKS again this year. My new profile will be available from early February and will be updated through to the festival in May. As usual, my exhibition will be virtual with different perspectives available on my ARTWEEKS profile: artweeks.revad.com and Instagram: instagram.com/codedimages.

going forward

As the new year begins, you will find a new look to revad.com, where I now show a grid of SELECTED FIDGETS. The FIDGET metaphor continues to be the single best descriptor of my practice. I can’t help myself and (if I am honest with myself) I don’t want to.

As usual, the many online spaces (I use to share my outcomes) are all linked at revad.com. But, here is a snapshot of the current crop:

Some are more active than others. Note, I no longer use any POD sites to exhibit. The only way to invest in an outcome is to agree a commission. Be aware, I only agree a commission if the project will further my practice. I am not in this to make money. Art is not a living.

Going forward, my main digital production environment consists of a desktop PC, a laptop (shown here) and a handful of Raspberry Pi modules. All are running Linux. The desk top and laptop are running Linux Mint 21.1 Vera Cinnamon and the Pi modules Raspberry Pi OS, all of which have Debian as a base. This gives a certain consistency and familiarity across these diverse hardware platforms.

In addition, I do use the Apple ecosystem of iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air, occasionally for production, mainly for consumption. This allows me to see my online virtual outcomes as others might. An audience eye view, you could say.

Primary software: The GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Procreate, Processing, IDLE (Python) and Sublime Text.

Secondary software: Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher.

I spend the majority of time with The GIMP, Processing, Sublime Text, and Procreate.

So, there we have it. I will be going forward from here.

power of 13

SEASON’S GREETINGS (POWER OF 13 / 2022)

Today, I made my (now) traditional new rendering of my POWER OF 13 seasonal tree. I started this around ten years ago. The concept was triggered by Sol Lewitt’s ALL IFS ANDS OR BUTS CONNECTED BY GREEN LINES. I just used numbers instead and gave each digit a unique colour, an idea I have used elsewhere in: https://cddmgs.wordpress.com/2018/03/08/100-significant/ . Anyway, here is this years rendition , made using Procreate, on an iPad Mini 6, with an Apple Pencil:

  • a beginning
  • digital sketches made using an iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate

Getting started with the idea of drawing my CONNECT series using a neurographic hand drawn aesthetic. A series I have named as NEUROCONNECT. These early outcomes were drawn on an iPad using an Apple Pencil and Procreate. Some tweaks may have been applied via the iPad version of Affinity Photo. I plan to do some real world drawing in a similar style of fluid mark making.

The kinetic output from these algorithms has a life expectancy exactly equal to the time you spend viewing them. During that life they will never repeat. When you leave and return a new life is born and that life will be unique.

Recording a moment as a static outcome is the equivalent of photography (within the algorithm’s world). Recording the kinetic outcome, for a period of time, might be considered cinematography. In both cases, as the artist, I fulfil all the usual roles associated with those mediums (writer, actor, director, producer, casting, props, etc.). We might say the technical platform fulfils some of the actor role and that of the venue. So, when you view on your device, you provide the venue and the ability to act in concert with my script and direction.
